This month, the American Heart Association (AHA) approves the new asthma drug Ventolin for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
A four-month clinical trial shows Ventolin (Salbutamol) may help prevent or treat symptoms of COPD, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.

In a separate trial, the AHA trialists, who presented their results at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, looked at the results of a large, randomized trial of a different formulation of Ventolin, such as Albuterol. The study included 18,841 patients with moderate-to-severe COPD who were randomly assigned to receive either the standard inhaled albuterol (Salbutamol) or the twice-daily inhaled salmeterol (Tenofovir-Princess).
Of those 18,841, Ventolin was the second most commonly prescribed drug among all asthma medications, after corticosteroids (Corticosteroids) and the over-the-counter drug albuterol.
Overall, the results showed Ventolin was significantly better than other asthma drugs, including inhaled corticosteroids and corticosteroids, for all COPD patients.
